An Introduction to Osteopathy

Today, Osteopathy is a growing profession with its Origin in 1870s.It was founded by A.T.Still.

A core principle behind osteopathy is the idea that the body is an integrated and indivisible whole, and contains self-healing mechanisms that can be utilized as part of the treatment. No part of the body works, or can be considered, in isolation. Relevant psychological and social factors also form part of the process of patient diagnosis.

The key tools for osteopathic diagnosis include listening to the patient’s history, examining muscles and joints and observing movements. X -rays, scans and other clinical investigations are also used if required. A wide range of gentle non-invasive manual Osteopathic Manipulation techniques are Cranial Osteopathy,Visceral manipulation,Muscle Energy Techniques, Counterstrain, Lymphatic activation,  Ligamentous articular strain, Myofascial Release, Integration, Chapman Reflexes, Still Technique, Functional Techniques, Deep tissue massage, joint articulation and manipulation.

 The qualified osteopaths are able to work autonomously as primary health care providers, in private practice in some areas within the NHS.

By combining your current discipline with osteopathic concepts-knowledge and clinical skills garnered from the MSc – you will be able to treat patients in a more versatile and personal manner. Working alongside professionals from different backgrounds in an osteopathic environment will enrich the shared knowledge and understanding of everyone on the course.

Course overview
  • The course lasts for two years and is full-time
  • The course takes place over 33 weeks  year
  • Upon successful completion, you will be able to apply for Osteopathic Council (OsC)  registration and be able to practice as an Osteopath
  • The MSc aims to promote integrated osteopathic care into your existing practice
  • During your time at The Jagan Nath University, you will be able to build a network of contacts within the osteopathic community
  • Having completed 1,000 hours of clinical education, you will be prepared and ready for practice
Entry requirements

All candidates must meet the following criteria:

    • Hold a degree in Physiotherapy or international equivalent qualification of physiotherapy.
    • Be able to critically evaluate material and study independently
    • Provide evidence of at least two years of recent experience in neuro-musculoskeletal care  via a clinical portfolio of evidence.
    • English language qualification
